Motorcycle Overheating or Coolant Leaks? Checks Before Replacing Parts

← All motorcycle guides

PLAN THE JOB

Choose with confidence.
Start with the right checks.

A coolant leak or rising temperature tells you to investigate the cooling system. It does not tell you which component to order. Start by identifying where the leak or temperature problem comes from, then match the replacement to the motorcycle and the job.

01

Find the fault before choosing the part

With the engine completely cool, note where coolant appears and whether the problem occurs in traffic, at speed or after parking. A workshop can check pressure retention and circulation using the manufacturer's procedure. Record the findings before removing parts; a radiator, thermostat and water pump solve different problems.

02

Radiator, water pump or thermostat housing?

A radiator listing needs to match the mounting points, hose outlets, fan brackets and surrounding clearance. For a water pump, compare the housing and drive arrangement and establish which seals are supplied. A thermostat housing may be sold separately from the thermostat: check the contents rather than assuming the assembly includes both.

03

Make a complete job list

Record the exact model, year and original reference. Compare the photographs with the unit on the bike, including any modifications. Check the specified coolant, seals, hose condition and refill or bleeding procedure before booking the work. A cap supplied with a radiator still needs to be appropriate for the application; appearance alone does not establish the right pressure rating.

04

Before the bike goes back on the road

Never open a hot pressurised cooling system. After fitting, follow the workshop manual's fill, bleed and leak-check procedure and confirm normal operation. If overheating continues, investigate the remaining system rather than replacing another component on suspicion.

How we can help

We carry cooling-system listings for several Yamaha and KTM applications. The product links below separate radiators, water pumps, thermostats and housings. Open the relevant listing for its exact coverage and current availability, or send us the original reference and clear photos to check a match.

Questions before you order

Does a new radiator fix every overheating problem?

No. Establish the cause first. The radiator is only one part of the cooling system.

Can I order a housing and reuse the thermostat?

Check its condition, the workshop requirements and the replacement's contents before deciding. A housing listing does not automatically include a thermostat.
