A motorcycle that won’t start is frustrating, but the symptom usually gives you a useful clue. The trick is to stop replacing parts at random and first work out which system has failed: battery power, cranking, fuel, spark, compression or an electrical interlock.
Start with the exact symptom
Listen and look before touching anything. ‘Nothing happens’, ‘one click’, ‘rapid clicking’, ‘cranks slowly’ and ‘cranks normally but will not fire’ point to different faults. Note what the dash, lights, fuel pump and starter do.

10 common reasons a motorcycle won’t start
1. A flat or weak battery
A battery can illuminate the dash and still collapse when the starter asks for high current. Check the terminals first. A healthy, fully charged 12-volt battery is commonly around 12.6–12.8 volts at rest; the correct cranking limit depends on the battery and bike. A sharp voltage drop under load is more useful than the resting number alone.
2. Loose, dirty or damaged battery connections
Inspect both battery posts, the main positive lead and the negative cable where it bolts to the frame or engine. A connection can look tight yet carry current poorly because of corrosion, paint, heat damage or a partly broken cable. Clean and tighten connections with the ignition off.
3. Kill switch or safety interlock
Confirm the engine stop switch is in RUN, the transmission is in neutral and the side-stand and clutch switches are operating. Intermittent switches often fail after water, dirt or a knock. If the neutral light behaves strangely, treat that as a clue rather than bypassing safety circuits.
4. Blown main or ignition fuse
A blown fuse is a symptom, not always the cause. Replace it only with the specified rating. If it blows again, stop and trace the short circuit instead of installing a larger fuse.
5. Faulty starter relay or solenoid
A click from the relay means its coil is being energised, but it does not prove the high-current contacts are healthy. Check voltage at the relay input and output while starting. Burnt terminals, heat-discoloured plastic or an intermittent heavy click can indicate failure.
6. Worn or failed starter motor
If the battery and heavy cables test well but the engine will not crank—or cranks intermittently—the starter motor may have worn brushes, a damaged commutator or internal mechanical drag. Read our starter motor testing guide before ordering a replacement.
7. No fuel delivery
On an injected bike, listen for the fuel-pump prime when the ignition is switched on. No sound can mean a fuse, relay, wiring, pump or ECU-control issue. A pump that runs can still deliver insufficient pressure, so do not condemn the injectors until pressure and flow are checked to the service-manual procedure.
8. No spark
Possible causes include fouled plugs, ignition coils, crank-position sensors, wiring faults and immobiliser problems. Fuel vapour and ignition testing do not mix—work in a ventilated area and keep sparks away from open fuel.
9. Charging-system failure
A bike may start after charging or jump-starting and then go flat again because the battery is not being replenished. Test charging voltage and then isolate the stator, regulator/rectifier, connectors and wiring. See our stator failure guide and stator vs regulator/rectifier comparison.
10. Fuel quality, compression or mechanical trouble
Old or contaminated fuel, incorrect valve clearances, cam-timing problems or low compression can all cause a normal-cranking no-start. These checks come later, after power, fuel and spark have been confirmed.
A sensible order of tests
- Confirm fuel level, RUN switch, neutral and side-stand position.
- Inspect battery terminals, earths and fuses.
- Measure battery voltage at rest and during cranking.
- Test the starter circuit if it will not crank; test fuel and spark if it cranks normally.
- Check charging output if the battery repeatedly goes flat.
- Use the model-specific workshop manual before resistance, pressure, timing or compression tests.
Safety note
Never bridge starter terminals casually, bypass safety switches for road use or test for spark beside exposed fuel. Support the bike securely, keep it in neutral and follow the workshop manual. Frequently asked questions
Can a battery show 12 volts and still be bad?
Yes. A weak battery may show reasonable open-circuit voltage but drop sharply when the starter loads it. A load or cranking-voltage test is more revealing.
Why does my motorcycle click but not start?
Rapid clicks usually point to low voltage or resistance in a battery connection. One solid click can also indicate relay, cable, starter or mechanical trouble.
