Ninja 400 Starter Motor — Replaces OE 21163-0782
The Ninja 400 Starter Motor is a direct replacement for OE part numbers 21163-0782 and 21163-0794, supplied brand new by Motorbike Parts Australia and backed by a 12-month warranty. This Ninja 400 Starter Motor suits the Kawasaki Ninja 400 (EX400) from 2018 to 2024, the Z400 from 2019, and the Ninja 500 and Z500 from 2024.
What the Ninja 400 Starter Motor Does
Your Ninja 400 Starter Motor is the electric motor that spins the engine over until it fires. Press the start button and current runs from the battery through the starter relay into the motor, which drives the starter gear into the crankshaft and cranks the engine. It draws very high current for a few seconds at a time, and the brushes, bushes and windings inside wear with age, heat and use.
Signs Your Ninja 400 Starter Motor Is Failing
- Slow, laboured cranking — the engine turns over but sounds tired
- A single click from the starter with no crank
- Intermittent starting that gets worse once the engine is hot
- Grinding or whirring without the engine turning
- Several attempts needed before the engine fires
- Burning smell from the starter area after cranking
Before you replace anything, check that the battery is fully charged and that the terminals and earth strap are clean and tight. A flat battery produces almost identical symptoms and is by far the more common cause. If the battery tests healthy and the fault persists, the starter motor is the next suspect.
Confirmed Fitment — Kawasaki Models
- Kawasaki Ninja 400 (EX400) 2018–2024 — standard, ABS, KRT Edition and SE
- Kawasaki Z400 (ER400) 2019–2024 — standard, ABS and SE
- Kawasaki Ninja 500 (EX500) 2024–2025 — standard, ABS, KRT Edition and SE
- Kawasaki Z500 (ER500) 2024–2025 — standard, ABS and SE
If you ride an Eliminator 450 or an Asian-market Ninja 250 built from 2018 onward, get in touch with your VIN before ordering — these models share much of the same engine architecture but we recommend confirming before you buy.
Models This Ninja 400 Starter Motor Does Not Fit
The earlier small-capacity Kawasakis look similar but use a completely different starter. This unit will not fit:
- Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Z300 (EX300) 2013–2017
- Kawasaki Ninja 250R (EX250) 2008–2012
- Kawasaki Ninja 650, Z650, Versys 650 and Vulcan S — these use 21163-0746 or 21163-0040
How to Confirm You Have the Right Part
The simplest check is to pull your existing starter and read the number stamped or stickered on the body. If it reads 21163-0782 or 21163-0794, this is your replacement. Alternatively, check your model year and variant against the fitment list above, or send us your VIN and we’ll confirm it for you before you order.
Fitting Your Ninja 400 Starter Motor
Installation is a straightforward bolt-in job. Disconnect the negative battery terminal first, remove the starter cable and the mounting bolts, then withdraw the old unit. Fit the new Ninja 400 Starter Motor with the O-ring lightly oiled, torque the mounting bolts to specification, reconnect the cable and battery, and test. We recommend fitting by a qualified technician.
Why Buy From Motorbike Parts Australia
Every starter motor we supply is brand new, built to OE specification with copper windings and a sealed housing, and covered by our 12-month warranty. We hold stock here in Australia and ship same business day with tracking, so you’re not waiting weeks on an overseas order to get your bike running again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this Ninja 400 Starter Motor fit my Z400?
Yes. The Z400 shares the same engine and starter as the Ninja 400, so this unit fits Z400 models from 2019 through 2024.
Will it fit a Ninja 300?
No. The Ninja 300 and Z300 (2013–2017) use a different starter motor. Only the 2018-onward EX400 platform and its Ninja 500 successor take 21163-0782.
My bike just clicks — is it the starter or the battery?
Test the battery first. A single click with no crank is most often a flat or failing battery, or a poor earth connection. If the battery is healthy and the connections are clean, the starter is the next suspect.
Is this a genuine Kawasaki part?
No. This is an aftermarket replacement built to OE specification and sold under the Motorbike Parts Australia brand. It replaces OE numbers 21163-0782 and 21163-0794 directly.
Fitment guide is provided as a general reference only. Please confirm compatibility using your VIN or by matching your existing part number before purchasing.
